LEGAL REQUIREMENTS AND PERMISSION TO FISH
PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES BELOW
1. Season | Fishing in rivers and waterways is only permitted between May 1st and August 31st.
Fishing in fresh water is not allowed on Sundays.
2. Fishing permits | All lakes are private property. Fishing permits for can only be bought for Leynarvatn, Mjáuvøtnini on Streymoy and for Sørvágsvatn, Fjallavatn, Hviltkinnavatn and Vatndalsvatn on Vágar.
· Fishing permits may be inspected on request.
· Fishing permits can be bought.
· Contact tourist offices around the islands if you want to buy permits, see relevant links for contact informations.
3. Fishing tackle | Only fishing rods with hooks or similar that fish can bite are permitted. Casting hooks directly into shoals is not permitted. Using lights is not permitted. Normally, fishing from boats is not allowed.
4. Minimum measurements | Sea trout and salmon: 30 cm.
5. Coastal fishing | Fishing from the coast is permitted almost all over the Faroe Islands. Be careful of currents and waves - they can be very powerful.
6. Overnight stays | As in the UK, staying overnight at recreational sites or in outlying fields is not allowed. Please stick to the camping places indicated or private land where you have the permission of the owner.
7. Buying fishing equipment | There are a few shops with a limited range of fishing equipment, see relevant links for contact informations.
8. Always remember to respect nature and not to leave used fishing lines or other rubbish behind.
· Birds and sheep must not be disturbed.
· Walking through meadows is not permitted. The grass will be used for winter feed.
· Close all gates behind you.
· Fog can appear without warning.
Please be sure to get the correct permissions before you go fishing on you own, as otherwise you may be commmitting an offence.
