 SAITHE | The Saithe has a lower jaw that is slightly protruding or equal jaws (in young). It's eye is small, about three times in snout length. The pelvic fin is longer than orbit in diameter. Daudal fin is notched. First dorsal fin rays are 13-14, second dorsal fin rays 20-22, third dorsal fin rays 20-24, first anal fin rays 25-28, second anal fin rays 19-23. Vertebrae 53-56. Gillrakers 35-40.
SIZE | The Saithe can grow to become 120 cm, however it's usual size is 60-90 cm.
DEPTH | The Saithe breeds offshore and inshore, midwater, in surface and in bottom layers.
COLOUR | The Saithe is black greenish-brown or olive, ligher on sides, its belly is silvery grey.
CHARACTERISTICS | The light and straight line and the dark colour.
FOOD | Almost entirely fish for the adults, crustaceans and small fish for the immature.
REPRODUCTION | From January in the south to May in the north, offshore at a depth of 100-200 meters.
WHERE TO CATCH IT | Western North Atlantic. Coasts from Bay to Biscay to Greenland, Iceland, Spetzbergen and Novaya Zemlya (young), the White Sea (occasionally), Skagerrak, Kattegat, Meklenburg Bay (rare). See also map below.
