SMALL RED FISH | The small Red Fish has 14-16 dorsal fins with spines and 12-15 (mostly 17-18) rays; 30-33 (mostly 32) scales on lateral line. Vertebrae 29-31.

SIZE | The Small Red fish may become 35 cm, however its usual size is 25 cm.

DEPTH | The small Red Fish breeds in benthic areas on rocky bottoms, close to shore, between 10 and 150 meters, but has also been recorded at 760 meters. Its behaviour is gregarious but to a far smaller degree than the other Sebastes.

COLOUR | Bright red, sides with several large dark bands.

FOOD | Various small crustaceans and young fish.

REPRODUCTION | Ovoviviparous, periods of insemination of the females and fertilization of oocytes unknown, release of larvae from May to August.

WHERE TO CATCH IT | The small Red Fish breeds in the Clofnam area, off Iceland and western Greenland (18 specimens known). Elsewhere from the south-eastern coast of Labrador southward to latitude of Long I. See the map below for further areas.
