 PORBEAGLE SHARK | The Porbeagle Shark is fusiform in body shape and its trunk is robust. It has two dorsal fins. The first dorsal fin origins above or anterior to inner corner of the pectoral fins. The second dorsal fin origins over origin of anal. Caudal peduncle very strongly flattened and widely expanded laterally. A secondary longitudinal keel, less distinct, below main keel on paudal peduncle.
THE MEAT | The meat is slightly darker and softer then the meat from cod
SIZE | The Porbeagle Shark’s maximal size is 4 meters, however a Porbeagle Shark bigger than 3 meters is a rare sight. Usually males are 2.6 meters, and females 2.2 meters. Most Porbeagle Shark that are big weigh around 150 kilos, and some can even weigh up to 300 kilos.
DEPTH | The Porbeagle Shark normally does not go deeper than 150 meters, however it has been caught at a 700 meters depth. It also appears on or near the surface.
COLOUR | Dark greyblue or blueblack on its back. It is lighter coloured around the sides and on its belly. Outer half or third of pectoral fins dusky, and anal white or slightly dusky.
CHARACTERISTICS | The Porbeagle Shark has a fusiform bodyshape. Its trunk is robust and it has a conical snout. The Porbeagle Shark has a pointed upper jaw that is slightly protruding, and teeth with smooth edges. The Porbeagle Shark’s first dorsal fin origin above or anterior to inner corner of pectoral fins, and its second dorsal fin origin over origin of anal.
FOOD | Wide range of pelagic and demersal fish.
REPRODUCTION | Ovoviviparous. The young are few (up to four) and their size at birth is around 50 – 70 centimeters.
WHERE TO CATCH IT | The Porbeagle Shark breeds in the eastern Atlantic, from Morocco to Iceland and western Barents Sea, also Mediterranean. It also breeds in the western Atlantic and temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere (Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans). On the map below you can see where the Porbeagle Shark breeds.
